Recently, there has been a string of amazing women killing it in sports and it is truly inspiring. In my almost 25 years of life, I do not remember reading about so many incredible women athletes. However, they still are not treated equally to men in the same sport or even considered true athletes. I was inspired to write this article by what President Obama said when he was describing the US Women’s Soccer team. He said, ‘“This team taught all of America’s children that ‘playing like a girl’ means you’re a badass.’” Women, who are athletes, are athletes. They do not play like a girl, they play like they know how to; aggressive, skilled, determined, motivated, accomplished, and successful. Abby Wambach, Elena Delle Donne, and Simone Biles are all proving what it means to be an athlete who is a woman. These athletes are accomplishing amazing things, and I wish they got as much recognition in the media as they deserve.
Abby Wambach has played with the US Women’s National Soccer Team for 15 years, been with the Women’s United Soccer Association on and off for 13 years, and she’s scored 184 goals. She has scored the most goals internationally for men and women. If she has accomplished all of this, then why aren’t men and woman soccer players paid equally?
Elena is just amazing. She averages 23.4 points, 8.4 rebounds; two blocked shots per game, and hit 207 of her 218 free-throw attempts. These numbers are insane, and her free-throw success rate is 95%. Out of the ABA, NBA, and WNBA there are only three other players who have shot 95% or better. They are Calvin Murphy, Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, and Ray Allen; the one thing in common is that they are all men and now Elena joins the club. She is the first woman to accomplish this, but the WNBA still does not have the same status as the NBA. I hope that one day all of the WNBA teams will have as much status as the NBA teams, because I think, we are doing a disservice to the country by not showing off all the talent that lies in the United States.
Recent to my list of badass women athletes is Simone Biles. On Sunday, she became the most decorated woman gymnast of all times. She has four world titles and six additional metals. To me this is an insane accomplishment, because she is only 18 years old!!! She made her senior debut in 2013, and since then accomplished this. I wish that more gymnastics events were made available to the public, because all of the gymnasts, male or female, are all so talented.
Athletes with these accomplishments deserve equal treatment, media attention, and following as there male counterparts. I hope that one day this is achieved, and sooner than later, because girls deserve to grow up with strong icons and to know they can accomplish their dreams.
